How to cut costs at home

Saving money at home is easier then you think

Saving money at home is easier then you think. It all starts with you. Think about how much you waste on every item you toss in the garbage. How much do you toss in the garbage that is recyclable? Think about it, in the U.S. people can bring their unwanted paper, pop cans or bottles to recycling plants and get money back for them. That’s one way to make money and at the same time your saving money by buying less garbage bags.

Another good is to insulate your pipes. By doing this it will cost less money to heat your water in your home. If you have a gas furnace try doing one of two things. First is to keep your temperature if your in Canada at only 15 degrees or do what I am currently doing and that is to turn off your gas furnace all together and get electric space heaters and only turning on the ones you need instead of heating the whole house since you wont be in every room at the same time. My gas bill last winter use to be about 150.00 per month and my hydro was about 100.00 per month. Now my gas bill for only needing to heat the water is about 50.00 a month and my hydro bill is still the same at 100.00 per month now that I've got the kids being more careful about turning things off when they are not using them and turning off lights to rooms they are not playing in at the time.

One way I also cut my heating bill down was by putting new insulation around the door and windows. This helps from letting the warm air out and keeps your home warm with less cost by heating. I wasn't able to put any plastic around my windows so what I did was put saran wrap on the actual glass of my windows. That gave it an extra layer to help keep the heat in.

Another way to try and cut down on garbage is to compost. Many people toss out tons of waste per year almost enough for one garbage bag. By composting you’re creating for soil for planting the following year as well as using one less garbage bag.

To cut down on water bills instead of just running the water till it either gets warm or cold put a container under the running water to catch it until you get the cold or hot water you need then put the water from that container in the fridge to cool and use what ever water currently coming out from the tap you need. The next time you need cold water you won’t need to go to the tap you just have to open up your fridge and there it is. This will help to keep your water bills down as well. Another good way to cut down on your water use is to fill a 600ml pop bottle of water and put it into the back of your toilet tank, when the water fills the tank after each flush it will take that amount of water less to fill the tank causing less water to be used and bringing your water bill down.

To save more money on your electrical bill try switching to CFL light bulbs. Try and get the 9watt ones that = 45 watts. Cuts down on cost dramaticly if you change all your balbs.

Good advive,I'm already doing a lot of those things.Another to add is when you go shopping is to only buy items that come in either recyclable or re-usable containers to cut down on garbage.Saves from having to think about it later.

Great first hub! When I was a teenager, I worked at a rustic camp in New Hampshire, we had a compost heap that worked very well in terms of cutting down on our garbage. Truth be told, at the end of the week we only had about six 50-gallon cans of garbage each week! Mind you there were 105 people in the camp total. That really is a great idea on many levels, as are your other ideas.

Thanks for sharing this and bringing it to my attention. Good luck!
